Thanksgiving Games

Thanksgiving Day just won’t be the same for me.  After 80 plus years, there will be no North/Frankford game.  No other game in the city has been scheduled on Thanksgiving for as many consecutive years at that game.  This was truly the Grand-daddy of Thanksgiving Day games.  But, even grandpa has to die some day, and we just need to move on.  I’ll be moving on by covering the Roman/Roxborough game.  It’ll be a good game for me to see, considering the number of “Norphans” on Roman’s squad.  In any event, I’m glad the folks who run District 12 set up the playoffs to allow for this week of games.  It’s a great tradition, and I hope some of these newer games become long term traditions.

It’s always tough to pick winners on Thanksgiving, mainly because there are so many factors involved.  Are all of the “regular” players available?  Will the early morning start affect anyone?  Will the same intensity be there?  Regardless, I’ll still take a shot at it.

I have categorized these games into three sections.  The "Sure Bets" are games where I think the picking will be easy  (I'm sure someone will let me down).  The "Most Likely" category is for games where my pick should win.  And, finally the "toss ups" are the game where anything could go.

Sure Bets
Gratz over FitzSimons
IMHOTEP over Boys Latin
Judge over Lincoln
Dobbins over Franklin
Northeast over Central
Roman over Roxborough

Most Likely
Frankford over Fels
Del-Val over Bartram
Germantown over King
Washington over Ryan
Mastbaum over University City

Toss Up
Furness over Comm Tech
Overbrook over West Philly
Southern over Neumann-Goretti
Truman over Conwell-Egan
Malvern Prep over St Joe Prep
Olney over Prep Charter

Up Next: I'll recap the Roman/Roxborough game on Friday, and early next week, I'll be posting my thoughts on the perceived "bye week" that the District 12 champions have in week 13.
