Week 4 Recap
In the PCL, St Joe Prep reestablished their dominance by knocking off the #1 team, LaSalle, in a come from behind 24-17 victory. This is the 4th of 5 straight big games for the Hawks, who take on # 5, Father Judge. LaSalle recovers with an easy week, playing Ryan.
Our pick ‘em panel went 4-0 in week 4, bringing us to a respectable 13-3 after 4 weeks. We’ll have four more games for week 4 (see below) to pick from. Now that most teams are in their regular season, we should see some competitive games this week.
Games to Watch Week 5
St Joseph Prep at Father Judge – Fri, 7:00PM (Northeast)
The Prep has a very challenging schedule during their first 5 weeks. With wins over Western PA power, McKeesport, New Jersey power, St Peter’s, and PCL AAAA champ, LaSalle in their first four weeks, the Prep is looking to reestablish themselves as the District 12 powerhouse. Father Judge comes into this game with a 4-0 record and a lot of confidence. Their four wins haven’t exactly been against eastern powers, but Judge will get to see just how good they are in this game. Unfortunately, the Prep has way too many weapons for the Crusaders.
Our Pick: Prep 34 – Judge 14
Northeast at Washington – Fri, 3:00PM
This is one of the three games in the Pub that causes excitement. Washington is a true District 12 power. Northeast is trying to shed their bridesmaid role in the Red division. This game will be one of the two tests that the Eagles will have this year, but in our humble opinion, it shouldn’t be much of a test at all.
Our Pick: Washington 24 – Northeast 6
West Catholic at Archbishop Wood – Sat, 1:00PM (Wissahickon)
This game features the state runner ups in the AAA (Wood) and AA (West) state championships from 2008. Both teams were on top of their games last year as they both rolled through the state competition in route to the state title game. Both lost that state title game, and both teams come into the 2009 season a little lighter than last year. But, this is still one of the better games to watch this week and it should be a hum-dinger.
Our Pick: West Catholic 28 – Wood 14
Kennedy-Kenrick at Cardinal Dougherty – Sat, 7:00PM (Germantown)
It’s not often that a game this early in the season has playoff implications, but that’s exactly what this game may mean. With West Catholic and Bishop McDevitt the early favorites to claim the top 2 spots in the PCL AA division, this game could very well decide which team makes the playoffs and which goes home after the regular season. The Cardinals are 3-1 for the first time this century, and despite their loss last week to Conwell-Egan, they are coming into this game with a high level of confidence. The Wolverines, playing their last PCL season (they will become Pope John Paul II and move to the Pioneer league next year), seem to be on the way down.
Our Pick: Dougherty 27 – Kennedy-Kenrick 6
District 12 – Top Ten
1. St Joseph Prep 3-1 (2) – Beating the #1 team makes you #1
2. LaSalle 3-1 (1) – Too bad they are missing their top RB,otherwise, they may have held on to the #1 spot.
3. West Catholic 3-1 (3) – This week provides the last of the competitive games for the Burrs.
4. Cardinal O’Hara 4-0 (5) – Still waiting for that tough challenge for the Lions
5. Father Judge 4-0 (4) – We’ll see this week how tough the Crusaders are
6. George Washington 3-1 (6) – Still the class of the Philly Pub
7. Frankford 1-3 (7) – Three tough losses to decent teams keep the Pioneers in the top 10.
8. Archbishop Wood 0-2 (8) – The Vikes got on track the last two weeks, but they face a tough #3 West Catholic this week.
9. Monsignor Bonner 2-2 (NR) – The Friars are trying very hard to get back of their former glory. Beating Roman this week would go a long way in achieving that goal.
10. Bishop McDevitt – 4-0 (NR) – McDevitt is 4-0 and still rolling along. A big win this week will establish them as the a solid #2 in the AA PCL division.
Under Consideration: Northeast (2-2) ,Bok (4-0), Conwell-Egan (2-2) , Roman (1-3) ,North Catholic (1-3)
